Born on February 15, 1954, Groening grew up in Portland, Oregon, and attended The Evergreen State College in Washington. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and began his career as a cartoonist, eventually creating "Life in Hell," a weekly comic strip that appeared in the Los Angeles Reader and other alternative newspapers.
