Art Portfolio Term 2: Session 2
In today's session we learned about Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. I always thought that Caravaggio was a renowned Italian artist of the Baroque period known for his use of dramatic lighting and intense realism in his paintings however, I never knew the backstory of him. Today's session gave me a very interesting Artist to research onto. After the research I made some notes about him. Neglecting his backstory, these are some some points that made me amazed to know about him.
1. Mastery of Light and Shadow: Caravaggio's use of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, was a revolutionary technique during his time. His mastery of this technique gave his paintings a sense of depth, drama, and realism.

2. Emphasis on Composition: Caravaggio's compositions were carefully arranged to create a sense of movement and balance. He often used asymmetrical compositions to create tension and drama.
3. Realism and Naturalism: Caravaggio's paintings were known for their intense realism and naturalism. He often used live models to create his works and captured even the imperfections of his subjects.

4. Capturing Human Emotions: Caravaggio was a master at capturing the emotions and expressions of his subjects. His works often depicted intense emotional moments, such as the anguish of a martyr or the ecstasy of a saint.
5. Bold Use of Color: Caravaggio's use of bold, vibrant colors added to the drama and intensity of his paintings.
6. Breaking the Rules: Caravaggio was known for breaking the rules of traditional art, such as using unidealized models, portraying religious figures in contemporary clothing, and placing his figures in dark and dramatic settings.
By studying Caravaggio's techniques and approach to art, I can learn to create works that are both realistic and emotional, and break free from traditional artistic conventions to create something truly unique.
