Ice Breaker : Recreating an Artwork

Our First Week started with an unique exercise called Ice Breaker: Recreating Artwork Challenge. It is a kind of work where people try to use themselves as a base add different types of materials and stuffs as a prop to take photos which resembles the artwork. It was a sensational trend in the time of quarantine and the challenge was inspired by Tussen Kunst en Quarantaine . The challenge they introduced us was called The Getty Museum challenge, where people have to create their favorite art with 3 things that were available in the home. This was very impressive move for art lovers around the world to show their creativity and connection through art. During the time when everyone were fighting against the pandemic, this challenge really made the isolation productive. Many people found it very productive and besides that it was making them critical thinkers. The hype of the challenge came out as an explosion in the world, people started being happy and entertained. The challenge really made people, who were not from the artistic background, a very good creator. Mostly the theme of the challenge came out to be very hilarious and surprising.

There are many recreated artwork in the internet about the challenge. We were introduced about this challenge by our class tutor in the Ice Breaker Exercises. He elaborated us showing so many paintings and their recreations. The class was full of excitement. At the end, the tutor chose 2 people on each group to recreate the challenge by ourselves. He had several pictures of the famous paintings, he made us choose from one of them. I was teamed up with one of my classmates. After setting up our mind, we started the work by choosing the picture below. The title of the artwork is "Not to be reproduced" by Rene Magritte. We chose this image because we found this to be easier to replicate. And also, the challenge was to make it resemble to the painting so we only focused on how to make it look accurate. But later after doing some research I came to know that this was one of the three painting of Magritte, created during Surrealist moment. The painting is considered one of his masterpieces and is a good example of his use of symbolism and his exploration of the nature of representation and perception. The painting was very iconic during surrealist moment. The painting had theme of duplication and repetition of self which was highly influential and also it was considered as one of the greatest painting of 20th century.

So, after doing the background research about the photo and the challenge, we generated some ideas on the process. We began by making a base for the frame. For the first try, we used two tables and a white fabric to make it a white base as the photo has some white cabinet with some random noise. The images below make its clear.

As instructed, we could use our own texture the the photo, therefore we replace the book in the painting with the phone, as our tutor advised us to make it in a modern way, for instance how would it have the modern ingredients. As we were only two of us to do it, we were struggling to find someone who could help us

  1. This is a strong blog post Bibek, well done. I think your initial information on the task is good, it gives this post some context as to 'WHY' you are doing this, and draws the reader in, interested to know how you may have responded to this task. I think your composition for your final piece is clever, combining contemporary props (mobile phone) to symbolise the objects in Rene Magritte's original artwork. Could you have found a way to have a 'less busy' background. Similar to Rene Magritte's work, perhaps worked against a plain backdrop (not the street scene outside)
    Well done
