Experimentation

Today we learned about some of the skills that can help to develop our project work. It was about experimentation. We learned that artists must experiment because there is no other road-map or other way to give the direction to the practices or to achieve the possibilities for creating something unique. Through the session I knew a new thing about 'practice' and 'experimentation'. Practice is not exactly the same as experiment although they can take place at the same time. According to the tutor, practice or rehearsal increases precision on an existing pattern of action whereas experimentation takes us outside those repetitions to unexplored territory and to never tried actions.

I also learned about Failure . According to tutor, "Failure is often seen as being responsible for a critical or commercial flop. But without taking risk and pushing boundaries art would remain stagnant and the creative spirit would be wasted on our own Fears. Making mistakes are important because this is what we as artist learn from."

We also learned about a photographic competition called Fautographique which was held in France in 1991 AD. According to the tutor, it involved 3000 amateur photographers who submitted 10,000 botched images that had failed to make the family album. There was an exhibition and conference in Poitiers and 2,157 prints were deposited in the Department of Prints and photography of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. After looking at the photos we came to know about the idea which was to step out of our comfort zone and be willing to make mistakes in order to find something in our project idea that we hadn't noticed so far.

Here are some of the ideas to consider in Experimentation:

  • Can you do this in a different medium?
  • Can you alter the style?
  • Can you change the appearance by exaggerating or minimizing?
  • Can you change the colors?

Considering what we did in skills week, I will be uploading a new blog on using some measurement techniques for human proportion measurement which was my skills development exercise. Later, I will be posting about my Experimentation outcome.
