Development Drawings: Class and Self Study

During week 3, I had the opportunity to bring out my imagination to life when tutor provided us the information about the different themes for the term 3. As, I had chosen the theme called 'Oceanic', I had to make some quick sketches during the class and the self study. After the instruction provided by the tutor, I dived intot the meserizing world of ocean then I sketched out some characters inspired by the depths of ocean, combining elements of mystery and mythology. In this blog post, I will take you through my creative process and introduce you to my imagination.

In class:

1. The creepy creature:

The first drawing that came to my mind was a creepy creature that lives in darkness. With two antina, jagged teeth, contracted little eyes, enlongated limbs and legs, it gave me thrills as I drew its bizarre form. This character represent the darker side of the ocean, reminding us that the beauty of ocean can also hide untold secrets.

2. The Villain with a trident:

Next, I imagined a villain who ruled over the ocean depths ruthlessly. He has a trident which is the symbol of dominance, serving as a visual reminder of the character's  cruelty and control. He has two horns and a crown in his head. He is supposed to be the king of the ocean. I also added gills in his ribcage which I was inspired by the movie called 'The Shark Boy and The Lave Girl'. I gave him a pose of looking bold and straight to the core of the viewers' heart to give them chills.

3. The snake and fish fusion:

While creating unique characters, I combined snake with fish. The fusion of these two creatures resulted in a mesmerizing result.  I wanted to make a wizard with a trident as I was lured in the mythology and folklore during the class. I gave him a snake head and the body of European eel. I also added tentacles of sea anemone on the head of the character to symobolise the ocean depths. I gave him a pose of holding a crystal spell in his hand.

4. The tentacles monster:

To further stretch my creative boundaries, I sketched a creature with long, twisting tentacles. I gave his tentacles in his head. I also gave him jagged teeth, long arms and haunting eyes. This being represent the features of a squid. I gave him a skinny body to show the creature lives in the darkness waiting for its pray to immerse into the depths.

During Self Study

1. Villainess:
As I made the character in class with a body of squid, an innovative idea came to my mind about my next character. I therefore, made a character with a body of octopus. This unique blend of human and octopus form heightened the connection between humanity and the underwater world. The character's iconic feautre portrayed the ocean's ability to hide folklore and mythology in its depth. By our, imagination everything is possible. I also gave her tentacles in her head and a trident that she hold as a main weapon.

2. Hero:

After creating the creatures and villain, I made up my mind to make a character who has ability of the animals in the ocean. I thought of making a animation story where there can be heroes and villains. Therefore, I chose to create a character who does not have a body of sea creature but has the ability to possess the power of sea animals. I always love making my characters to have bulky muscles and a bold poses. I did the same with my character. I gave him a heroic pose which stood tall and unbreakable. He symbolize bravery and fight against any obstacles. The presence of the character added a sense of courage and determination to the collection, reminding me the unbreakable spirit that lies within me.

3. Heroine:

No exploration of oceanic themes would be complete without including a mermaid. This iconic figure, half human and half-fish, illustrate the allure and mystique of the sea. My sketch of the mermaid showed her glorious beauty, her flowing hair and tail capturing the essence of her enchanting existence beneth the ocean. Mermaid has a huge place inside the core of my heart because of the movies and series that I used to watch while I was a child. I used to think the mermaids were real and I will meet them once in my life. However, all those feelings and thoughts were my immature beliefs. Thus, I fulfilled the dream by making one mermaid in my sketchbook.

Creating these development drawings based on an Oceanic theme was an incredible journey of exploration and imagination. Each character I brought to life on paper were the wonder of the ocean. These sketches allowed me to focus on the basic elements of form and shape. The characters that I drew in the class look dull in compared to the sketchs in the study time because during the class our tutor advised us to quickly sketch out the ideas in the paper as he would be giving us the studio time to complete more characters. Therefore, I sketched out the ideas quick in the class. However, in the study time, I could bring out more without any distraction and fully being focused to the imagination. Thus, those sketches were not the final project of the term but ideas for the final outcome.

I want to research about legendary sea creatures more to make my characters have a better story and attraction. In my upcoming blogs, I will be posting about Legendary Sea Creatures.
