Main Theme Selection: Oceanic
We had online session earlier this week where we were introduced about the major project for this term. In this term we have been given to chose among one of the three themes; Spiders from Mars, Renaissance and Oceanic.
According to the presentation showed by the tutor,
Spiders From Mars: It focus on space travel, the natural world, the cultural impact of David Bowie. It is also about finding meaning in each aspect of this theme.
Renaissance: It means 'rebirth', this is also a period in history that had a profound effect on Art and Society, on Fashion, Painting, Architecture, Sculpture, Commerce and Politics leading to the beginnings of the Modern World.
Oceanic: It considers the influence of the oceans on Art and Design, looking at artists that have used it as an inspiration, the environment and our use of this valuable resource.
Now coming to my decision, I chose the Oceanic theme. The particular reason for this is that I always wanted to explore the ocean as my country is a landlocked country. Apart from this, I always had fantasized how the world under the ocean would really look like. Besides what the media shows us, I think ocean has its own universe to explore. The ocean itself is filled with creativity. As an artist, I can create a wonderful fantasy out of the ocean. Therefore, in this term, I would be putting all my efforts and creativity towards this project.
However, between the session, we were given a 30 minutes break to generate ideas about the theme and the art that we will be creating during the term. The session was called "Fantastic Five". I sketched some of the drawings accordingly to the theme I chose. As I am an animator, I focused my outcomes for a story related concepts. A story has a hero, heroin, side characters and a villain. Similarly, I made a hero, a heroin, some side characters, monsters and a villain.
These are the characters that I created.
However, the project has been divided into 3 options which I can choose to do.
1. 4 2D and 2 3D
2. 3 2D and 3 3D
3. 5 3D
For now, I have sticked to 4 2D and 2 3D. Nevertheless, I would be making changes to my mind if necessary before the sign-off.
I think you made the right choice - 4 x 2D and 2 x 3D suits animation as you can turn some of your 2D designs into 3D figures. This is how you will work on your undergraduate. There will be a figure sculpting workshop in Week 5, if you start developing some character ideas now, you will be able to start creating them in 3D in Week 5 and stay ahead of your timescale.
